Lesley Strathie has been appointed as the chief executive officer of HMRC. She will take up her new post in early November.
After joining the then DHSS, Ms Strathie worked in a number of unemployment benefit offices in south-west Scotland before moving to London in 1984.
She entered the Senior Civil Service in 2000, becoming chief operating officer of Jobcentre Plus in August 2003 and its CEO and second permanent secretary at the Department for Work and Pensions in October 2005.
HMRC's acting chief executive, Dave Hartnett, has been appointed permanent secretary for tax at the Revenue.
