Taxpayers should remember the Adjudicator if they find that complaining to HMRC gets them nowhere, says ALLISON PLAGER

KEY POINTS

  • Over 1 700 cases were settled in 2007-08.
  • Turnaround in dealing with complaints increased slightly in the year.
  • Tax credits are still the greatest cause for complaint to the Adjudicator.
  • Revenue departments accept the outcome of complaints.

Complaints about tax credits comprise over 80% of all the complaints to the Adjudicator said Dame Barbara Mills DBE QC in her foreword to the 2008 Adjudicator's Office annual report.

She went on to say that 2007-08 had been a year of disruption. First the operation of Code of Practice 26 (relating to writing off tax credit overpayments) was reviewed and this affected the work carried out by the Adjudicator on tax credit complaints of this nature.
