Fifty local offices are to close following HMRC's review of facilities housing around 7,500 staff outside its urban centres in the East Midlands, North East, South East and West Midlands regions.
The withdrawal will be begin immediately and continue until 2011 - but all walk-in enquiry centres will remain in their current locations or ne moved to a nearby site.
Financial Secretary to the Treasury Jane Kennedy said: 'These have not been easy decisions. However, the overriding consideration has to be the department's need to address new and challenging customer demands by restructuring its business and estate in the most effective and efficient way possible'.
There are 1,885 employees in offices scheduled for closure, according to the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS).
In a briefing to members the PCS said: 'It is extremely disappointing that these decisions mirror precisely the proposals made at the start of the consultation process'.
The union urged its members to 'continue to participate and keep up the pressure in the PCS campaign to save local offices and protect public services'.
