Allison has given the story of her attempt to file online in the article Tax is taxing. I had similar problems on the night of 30 January but finally managed to get my return accepted sometime shortly after midnight.

(Richard informed us smugly that his paper return had been delivered by hand with no problems whatsoever.)

It appears that the system finally unjammed some time over the weekend. However it certainly was not by all accounts working adequately on Friday 1 February the day that HMRC had given as an extension to the 31 January deadline.
