HMRC have announced that taxpayers now have until the end of 1 February to provide their self assesesment tax returns without fear of being fined for late submission.
The department said that this will apply to both those filing online and those chosing the traditional paper format.
The 24-hour 'extension' is a consequence of technical dificulties suffered by the Revenue's online filing system, which resulted in many people being unable to use the facility on SA deadline day.
However, as reported in Taxation's 17 January issue, HMRC had already confirmed that all returns received by midnight on 1 February would not incur a penalty, despite being judged as late for enquiry purposes.
The Revenue's system went down at about 10.30am on 31 January. At around 3.30pm, it was announced that the online facility system was 'rapidly returning to normal levels of service'.
