How can HMRC help small businesses meet their tax obligations? ALLISON PLAGER analyses a recent report on this subject

HMRC are 'not  notorious for being a friendly amiable open organisation'. These were the words of Austin Mitchell MP as he framed a question for Paul Gray HMRC chairman who was giving evidence on how HMRC plans to make life simpler for small businesses.

'Paul Gray parried the question by saying that HMRC are trying to make their systems and processes 'more customer focused' but added that they were 'cracking down very hard even in a draconian way … on those deliberately seeking to defraud [HMRC]'.
