Multiple 64-8s

I refer to the news item 'Multiple agents' (see Taxation 5/12 April 2007 page 379). We have had a problem which may be obliquely related to the inability of HMRC to accept multiple authority forms 64-8.
There is a company which scours Companies House records and then writes to shareholders indicating that there is a capital loss claim which they will obtain for a fee. As part of the paperwork they send a 64-8 which should the client want to avail himself of the service on offer is then signed returned and sent to HMRC. The first we knew what had happened was the client telling us that this had been done. Consequently we as the client's agent are 'out in the cold'. It is then a matter of getting a new 64-8 signed by the client and...
