I have returned my petition form and more power to your elbow - anything which may help to prevent this pernicious and pointless development is welcome.
It is acknowledged even among the powers-that-be that self assessment requires a body of external tax agents in order to function at all let alone effectively.  My feeling is that notwithstanding the essentially adversarial nature of HMRC versus taxpayer/agent the system involves (or ought to involve) a degree of mutual co-operation in order to function properly.
If this ghastly change comes into force then it will be my intention to:

  • Submit only tax repayment cases over the Internet; I currently submit all returns over the Internet.
  • Prepare returns in provisional figures as early as possible and update them as assignments are completed but otherwise...
