I enjoyed the piece, 'Filing madness', in Taxation magazine (3 February 2005, page 416) about the difficulties experienced when using the filing by Internet service. However, the Revenue is not the only guilty party when it comes to 'enabling' taxpayers. Two of my clients suffered unacceptable difficulties at the hands of the banks when trying to pay their tax in January. Each client had more than enough cleared funds in his account to pay the tax.

The first client decided to pay by Internet. The payment was rejected and he phoned the bank to find out why. The reason was because his payment exceeded the maximum Internet payment of £5 000. The bank advised that there would be no problem making a series of payments of £5 000 each in order to make up the full transaction amount. Each payment took 15 minutes to complete and...
