31 January is the deadline for self assessment returns and payments for 2003-04. Interest will be due on any payments that hit the Revenue's mat after that date, and there are surcharges on tax that is still unpaid 29 days later. The Revenue is extending its opening hours in most of its enquiry centres around 31 January, and a spreadsheet on its website gives details of the relevant offices and available post boxes. When using the spreadsheet, it is necessary to tab along the bottom to find the different geographical regions of the UK.
Although 31 January this year falls on a Monday, the Revenue has confirmed to Taxation that tax returns for 2003-04 which are received on 1 February, while still late, will not attract the £100 late filing penalty.
