Is Anyone Out There Listening?
I write in support of John Tallon's article published in Taxation on 24 June 2004 .
He rightly cites Adam Smith's four maxims about taxation, which remain as true today as when they were written and from which this Government is departing, particularly with arbitrary tax changes and excessive complexity increasing the cost of administration and collection.

I write in support of John Tallon's article published in Taxation on 24 June 2004 .
He rightly cites Adam Smith's four maxims about taxation which remain as true today as when they were written and from which this Government is departing particularly with arbitrary tax changes and excessive complexity increasing the cost of administration and collection.
John Tallon rightly criticises in particular the measures in the Finance Bill in relation to pre-owned assets and the reporting of avoidance schemes. The Conservative Opposition has tabled and argued amendments in the committee stage of the Finance Bill and for report raising both objections of principle and specific criticisms.
The Labour Government has presented the pre-owned assets legislation as an attack on aggressive inheritance tax...
