8,371,251 2001-02 tax returns were filed by 31 January 2003, Dawn Primarolo announced in the House of Commons recently. 9,246,131 returns were issued, so the success rate in terms of returns filed on time was 90.54 per cent.

Metallgesellschaft
The Chancellor was asked how much compensation the Revenue had paid to claimants following the European Court of Justice's decision in Metallgesellschaft and others v Commissioners of Inland Revenue and attorney general (Case C-397/98) [2001] STC 452. Dawn Primarolo said that £32,489,711 had been paid to date.

Unpaid tax
In the last ten years, in proportion to the tax involved, the amount of tax unpaid at the end of the Revenue's accounting year has more or less halved. Tax remitted or written off has fallen from two per cent to 0.3 per cent, Dawn Primarolo said in reply to a recent written question.

Tax revenue
The trend in revenues from special investigations, late filing, company non-compliance pre self-assessment intelligence work, company aspect enquiries, non-business self-assessment enquiries and section self-assessment investigations, non-compliance and full business reviews was the subject of a written question to the Chancellor. Dawn Primarolo said that the trend was upwards, as the total revenue from the Revenue's work in all these areas has increased from £865 million in 1999-2000 to £990 million in 2000-01 and to £1,090 million in 2001-02.

Stamp duty
758 commercial transactions in disadvantaged electoral wards have been exempted from stamp duty between the introduction of the relief in November 2001 and the end of January 2003. The value of the relief was £749,010.

E-filers
The number of taxpayers registered with the Revenue's filing by Internet service for personal tax returns at January 2003 was 4,409,556. The percentage of people who had actually used the service at that date was approximately ten per cent, i.e., 440,237.
