Do you remember the good old days at school when we used to get a mid-term report to tell our parents how well or badly we were doing at maths or cross-country running?

In those days I did a lot better at maths than running – the words “could do better” seemed to be linked with my cross-country efforts – although I did manage to sneak into the top 50 places during one race when I found a very useful shortcut that saved about 800 metres.
