Congratulations to all those who have been shortlisted and commiserations to those who have not made it this year. On page 14, I share with readers some observations on the current state of our profession as it is reflected through this year’s award entries but I wanted here to say thank you to all of the judges who worked so hard in devising the shortlist.
In selecting our judges we try to reflect the different strands of our profession and its people and this year was no exception. We are lucky that so many of our leading lights were prepared to give up their time to support us. What I always like about the judging day is the different views people take over entries. My expectation going into the judging meeting is that in about 50% of the categories the shortlist more or less decides itself with very little disagreement. In the other 50% there are very different views about the merits of particular entries and we then have a very lively debate before we get to the shortlist. But what I can never predict is which award categories will be in the first 50% and which in the second. This year was no exception. It all adds to the interest of the day.
For the first time since 2019 we will have a live ceremony. I can’t wait for the opportunity to meet so many friends and colleagues whom I have not seen for more than two years. There is so much to catch up on and stories of how we coped in lockdown to share. We have a great host lined up – no, I am not going to reveal who it is – and everything is set fair for a memorable evening. I do hope you will be able to join us.
