HMRC has published guidance on how to value stocks and shares for inheritance tax purposes. It covers the various issues relating to the valuation of list shares and also those for unlisted shares. HMRC points out that, as there is no active open market for most unquoted shares, it will be necessary to check other background information normally available to shareholders, such as the company’s accounts and performance status. It also mentions its internal manual Shares and Assets Valuation as a source of information on unlisted shares.
