Treasury will become an exemplar finance department in supporting government’s environmental goals

The government agrees with some of the recommendations made by the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee in its report Environmental tax measures.

In its latest minutes the Treasury said it would aim to become an exemplar finance department in supporting government’s environmental goals like the UK’s net zero target. It said it was ‘already playing an active role in supporting the government’s environmental goals including delivery of the legally-binding net zero commitment’. Further the Treasury was conducting an analytical review exploring the key issues and trade-offs as the UK decarbonises.

The government agreed with the committee’s recommendation that by COP26 in November 2021 the Treasury would set out a clear vision of how it will work to help the UK achieve net zero.
