Handled any unusual cases recently?

What came across your desk this week? These days of course that desk might be a virtual one: does anybody actually receive letters anymore?

This week we launch a new feature – a series of short pieces where we invite readers to share something which came across their desk recently that they think their fellow readers will find interesting, helpful, humorous or even bizarre. So it might be that you have a client situation you haven’t encountered before, a piece of legislation you hadn’t previously come across, an HMRC interpretation that surprised you or just something out of the ordinary that you wanted to share. You can use the format we have used in our first piece (see page 22) but don’t worry too much about that. We will sort it out. No need to write an essay – 500 words or so will be fine.

Taxation has, I hope, always been close to its readers. Readers’ forum is one way in which readers engage with us, and we do always enjoy reading your feedback. But we hope that this new feature gives readers another opportunity to be part of the Taxation magazine community. In 1927 our founding editor had a lofty ambition for the magazine: ‘It shall supply every need arising from the practical and theoretical sides of the subject of taxation, so that, no matter what a subscriber desires to know he may feel that the solution to his difficulty is readily available’. Supplying ‘every need’ is a tall order and it would certainly take many more pages than we have at our disposal even to start to do this – but your help in supporting this new feature would certainly help us maintain our founder’s lofty intentions.

If you do one thing...

If you have clients who make customs declarations, tell them about the HMRC consultation on the issue – see tinyurl.com/hmrcfutcustdecl.
