Time to think about the 2024 Taxation Awards
As summer starts to become a distant memory, thoughts turn – at least they do in the Taxation magazine office – to the 2024 Taxation Awards. Yes, I know that it seems only a few weeks ago that we were all together celebrating 2023’s winners, but planning for next year is well underway. The awards website is now open for entries (see tinyurl.com/taxationawards2024). The deadline is 23 February. We don’t expect entries to be flooding in any time soon, but a good entry needs a lot of thought and preparation time so perhaps you should put ‘Taxation Awards’ on your next meeting agenda.
We really try to ensure that everybody involved in the tax profession has an opportunity to enter, so this year we have added two new categories – best tax chambers and best employment tax team – to those which we ran last year. Last year we had a record number of entries, but records are there to be beaten so here’s hoping for a bumper crop in 2024.
To whet your appetite, this issue includes articles from four of the 2023 winners. I particularly commend the piece from the inaugural winner of the tax mentor of the year Paul Scully. Mentoring is such an important skill. Anybody who has had the benefit of being supported by a colleague knows just how much difference it can make to your career. Being a mentor can itself be incredibly rewarding. When I look back over my career the thing that gives me more pride than anything else is knowing that I have helped some of my younger colleagues to gain the confidence and skills to become leading lights in our profession.
