Christmas wishlist for the chancellor

This is the last issue of the magazine before the Christmas break so, on behalf of all at Taxation, I extend my best wishes to all our readers, while acknowledging that Christmas does not have the same religious significance for everybody.

This has been another extraordinary year. I will do my customary review of the year as seen through the eyes of Taxation magazine in our first issue of the new year so I’ll use this column instead to look forward.

Wouldn’t it be great if 2023 turned out to be an ordinary, boring year! The past few years have seen so much upheaval in the tax system through Brexit, Covid-19 and political turmoil that an opportunity to have a year of stability would be welcome.

It is too much, I suppose, to hope that the chancellor stands up on Budget Day and says ‘I propose no tax changes this year’, but if we are to have new measures let them at least be properly thought out and part of an overall framework: the last thing we need is more tinkering for the sake of it.

That’s not so say of course that the tax system is perfect. There are certainly areas which need to be looked at.

Top on my list would be a wholesale review of the Taxes Management Act, which is creaking at the edges and is in my view wholly inadequate for the digital age. Readers will have their own priorities and it would be interesting to compare notes.

So, if you fancy a few minutes’ escape from the Christmas festivities, why not drop us a line with your wishlist (taxation@lexisnexis.co.uk). We could turn responses into a feedback feature and send a copy to the chancellor as a new year present.

Merry Christmas!
