The UK has promised a new package of support aimed at improving the tax systems of developing countries, the Department for International Development said. The move is aimed at helping end their reliance on aid.
The development assistance will:
- help tackle tax evasion and avoidance in the developing world, creating a more stable environment for future UK investments;
- help build effective tax systems and generate more revenue to fund public services such as health and education; and
- provide British experts to support tax reforms in the developing world.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development estimates the average developing country generates tax revenues of around 14% of GDP. This is far below the 35% average for developed countries.
