Entitlement to the state pension was the topic of a Readers’ forum query ‘Pension forecast’ in Taxation 13 February 2025. The querist has since expanded on their query saying:

‘I was surprised that the forecast appeared to show that she would be entitled to a full pension without further contributions before her pension date on 17 June 2028 in spite of only having 33 qualifying years in her record (not 35). The answers said that the forecast assumes that further qualifying years will be added before the pension date. If that is the case I think the wording is very misleading: it says the forecast “is based on your National Insurance record up to 5 April 2024” “you cannot improve your forecast any more” and suggests that “if you’re working you may still need to pay NIC until 17 June 2028 as they...
