One-third of Scots unaware of Holyrood’s tax changes

Scotland’s political parties must improve public awareness of devolved taxation in the next Scottish parliament say professional bodies as a new poll shows that one third of Scots are unaware that Holyrood has made changes to the tax system.

The poll – the third to be commissioned by the Chartered Institute of Taxation since the introduction of Scotland’s new income tax regime in 2018 - found:

  • 33% said they were unaware that the Scottish parliament had made changes to the tax system since 2018.
  • 26% were ‘not aware of’ the Holyrood’s powers to make changes to income tax rates in Scotland while 25% said the same for its powers over council tax business rates and land and buildings transaction tax.
