A record-breaking 11,581,962 taxpayers met the 31 January deadline for submitting their 2022-23 self-assessment tax returns, according to HMRC. This figure includes about 554,000 returns filed voluntarily suggesting that fiscal drag has resulted in more individuals having to pay the high income child benefit charge and being pushed past the £100,000 income limit for filing a return.
HMRC revealed that 61,549 taxpayers filed between 4pm and 5pm on 31 January – the peak hour for filing – and 32,958 taxpayers filed between 11pm and midnight.
Of the expected 12,187,811 returns due, the department estimates that about 1.1 million taxpayers failed to file on time and urges anyone who missed the deadline to submit their tax return now.
