More than 4,400 returns filed on Christmas day

HMRC received 4,409 self-assessment tax returns on Christmas Day – slightly fewer than on the same day in 2023, when 4,757 were submitted. The peak time for filing was between 3pm and 4pm when 368 returns were submitted.

A further 11,932 taxpayers sent their returns on Boxing Day, the most popular time being between 4pm and 5pm with 1,108 returns filed during that hour. On Christmas Eve, HMRC received 23,731 returns.

The figure for New Year’s Eve was 38,260 – including 310 submissions in the final hour of 2024 – while 24,828 people kicked off 2025 by filing on New Year’s Day.

According to HMRC, some 5.4 million people have yet to file their return ahead of 31 January deadline.
