More taxpayers choose to file their self-assessment return on 6 April

The number of self-assessment taxpayers who filed their tax return on the first day of the tax year has more than doubled since 2018 HMRC has revealed.

More than 77 500 taxpayers submitted their 2022-23 return on 6 April 2023 compared to almost 37 000 customers on 6 April 2018.

The department said that by completing their self assessment early taxpayers avoid the stress of last-minute filing. More than 860 000 taxpayers submitted their 2021-22 tax return on 31 January 2023.

Blick Rothenberg chief executive officer Nimesh Shah cited other advantages of filing early such as receiving any repayment sooner being able to reduce to the second payment on account due in July and planning tax cash flow for any future tax payments.
