The 4.3 million residents of London paid more than a quarter – £59.3bn (26.7%) – of annual income tax paid in the UK in 2020-21 according to research by the Global Payroll Association (GPA). Residents of the south east and east of England come next. Taxpayers in these regions contributed 18.6% and 10.6% of the national total while Northern Ireland paid the smallest share at 1.5%.
The GPA’s research showed that the 68 000 residents of the London borough of Kensington and Chelsea accounted for 2.2% or £4.9bn of the total; they were followed by Westminster (£4.5bn) Camden (£4.08bn) and Wandsworth (£3.99bn).
The first non-London authority on the list was Buckinghamshire which came in at number five. Here the locals contributed just over £3.6bn.
Edinburgh ranked eighth with residents contributing £2.4bn.
