Reduced helpline time

HMRC is running a trial of reducing the hours on some of its telephony services so that it can deal with post that has built up over the past year. To test the approach it will close the VAT and CT phone lines (with the exception of the bereavement line) on 10 and 17 December.
 

Social security

The Income Tax (Exemption of Social Security Benefits) Regulations SI 2021/1341 will exempt from tax four new social security payments with retrospective effect from the date of their introduction.

Pandemic grants 

HMRC has updated its guidance on reporting coronavirus grants and support payments. A new section ‘Company tax return’ explains that these payments are taxable and must be declared on company tax returns.
