Self assessment

The deadline for 2020-21 self-assessment tax returns submitted on paper is 31 October. Online returns must be filed by 31 January 2022. HMRC states that more than 63 500 taxpayers sent their 2020-21 returns on 6 April this year.

Umbrella companies

HMRC has published new guidance on how to reduce the risk of using a non-compliant umbrella company for UK agencies or businesses that use temporary labour.

Making tax digital

HMRC has updated its guidance on eligibility for making tax digital (MTD) for income tax to state that non-UK resident or non-UK domiciled taxpayers only need to follow the MTD for income tax rules for their UK self-employment and property income.
