Is it time to update the marriage vows? They are not immutable – after all the word ‘obey’ is now often omitted. What I have in mind is an amendment so that they now read:

to be my wife/husband

to have and to hold

from this day forward;

for better for worse

for richer for poorer

in sickness and in health

to love and to cherish

to agree to enter into a binding and irrevocable election under section two hundred and twenty-two of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 to nominate **** as our main residence

till death us do part.
