HMRC service standards must be a key priority, says ATT

At a roundtable discussion at the Treasury on 24 July a range of external stakeholders including the Association of Taxation Technicians discussed their priorities for the tax system under the new government.

The ATT's key priorities were:

  • improving HMRC service standards;
  • expanding access to digital services and ensuring agents can see and do everything their clients can online;
  • boosting taxpayer confidence by avoiding frequent changes in tax policy;
  • consulting on ways to address 'cliff edges' in the tax system which are a disincentive to growth;
  • tackling the issue of IR35 and 'false' self-employment to provide greater certainty over employment status and its implications for tax; and
  • reviewing small fixed allowances and exemptions to ensure their value is not eroded by inflation.

The association expanded on these points in a follow-up letter to the exchequer secretary to the Treasury after the meeting.
