At a roundtable discussion at the Treasury on 24 July a range of external stakeholders including the Association of Taxation Technicians discussed their priorities for the tax system under the new government.
The ATT's key priorities were:
- improving HMRC service standards;
- expanding access to digital services and ensuring agents can see and do everything their clients can online;
- boosting taxpayer confidence by avoiding frequent changes in tax policy;
- consulting on ways to address 'cliff edges' in the tax system which are a disincentive to growth;
- tackling the issue of IR35 and 'false' self-employment to provide greater certainty over employment status and its implications for tax; and
- reviewing small fixed allowances and exemptions to ensure their value is not eroded by inflation.
The association expanded on these points in a follow-up letter to the exchequer secretary to the Treasury after the meeting.
