High earners may need to file 2021-22 returns by 29 September

Taxpayers with income over £200 000 are being asked to check whether they should have submitted tax returns for 2021-22.

HMRC is sending different types of letters to high earners depending on whether they have a dormant self-assessment account (letter one) have received a notice to submit a tax return for 2021-22 but have not done so (letter two) or is not in self assessment but their level of income suggests they should be (letter three).  

Should they find that a tax return should have been submitted for 2021-22 they have until 29 September to do so and to register for self assessment. If a return was not required the taxpayer still needs to get in contact with HMRC by this date.
