Where on earth do I start? That was my reaction when I started to draft this piece on the evening of Rachel Reeves’ Budget. After all a speech which announced a £40bn rise in taxes and which was followed by a Red Book containing well over 100 tax-related measures would never be one that is easily capable of quick summary.

We have decided to concentrate our coverage of the Budget in the next issue where we have commissioned a panel of experts to share with us their considered thoughts on the key measures that effect their particular specialist area. But as usual I will in this piece give a general overview of some of the emerging themes.
