HMRC received 2,828 self-assessment tax returns on Christmas day – this compares with 2,700 submitted on the same day in 2020. The peak time for filing was between 12 noon and 1pm when 227 returns were sent. Some 8,641 taxpayers filed their returns on Boxing day.
The figures for new year’s eve and new year’s day were 33,467 and 14,231 respectively.
HMRC states that of the 12.2 million tax returns due by 31 January 2022, as at 6 January, almost 6.5 million forms have been received.
