Paul Aplin has reminded us that 23 April was not only St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s birthday, but also 25 years to the day since the dawning of the digital age in tax.
A brief news item in Taxation saying that the Inland Revenue would be launching a new e-filing system and that three software suppliers were in the market, alerted Paul to the launch of the electronic lodgement service (ELS). A call to his firm’s software supplier then resulted in AC Mole and Sons using ELS to file the UK’s first online personal tax return.
