HMRC received 3,003 self-assessment tax returns on Christmas day – a not insubstantial increase on the 2,616 taxpayers who filed returns on the same day in 2018. The peak time was between noon and 1pm, when more than 245 taxpayers filed. Another 9,254 returns were submitted on Boxing day.
The figures for new year’s eve and new year’s day were 34,488 and 17,080 respectively.
According to HMRC, of the 11.7 million returns due, about 54% of taxpayers have already filed their returns with more than 5.6 million completing online.
