Call to make land ownership trusts more transparent

05 January 2024
Issue: 4919 / Categories: News

The government is consulting on how to improve transparency of land ownership involving trusts. It is seeking views on whether to widen access to trust information held on the register of overseas entities (ROE). Possible options include:

  • making trust information publicly available by default, except for protected information, so that information collected about trusts on the ROE would no longer be suppressed from public inspection; and
  • making some information publicly available by default.

There is also the option of making no changes.

In addition to the proposals relating to the ROE, the government is interested to hear views on the extent to which the transparency of land held by trusts not associated with ROE entities could be improved.

Responses can be made by completing an online survey or by emailing: trusttransparency@levellingup.gov.uk. The consultation closes on 21 February.
