Businesses' use of technology for customs purposes under review

HMRC is seeking views on potential simplifications to customs declarations and the way that businesses use technology to facilitate the completion of customs declarations and other customs processes.

In particular, the government would like to hear from businesses about the benefits and burdens of certain data elements and test proposals for simplification. It will use the information provided in conjunction with internal analysis to ensure it strikes ‘the right balance between minimising burdens and effectively delivering the government’s core border functions’.

On the role new technologies could play in improving traders’ interaction with border processes, the government hopes to gain some understanding of traders’ and intermediaries’ current use of technology to aid meeting customs requirements and expectations on how technology could be deployed in the future.

Responses should be emailed to customsdeclarationsandtechnology@hmrc.gov.uk by 8 September.
