Note that in view of the problems encountered by taxpayers using HMRC’s employment-related securities (ERS) service the department has extended the deadline for submitting 2016-17 returns to 24 August 2017 from 6 July.

The moral in PM Reinforcement (NW) Ltd is to ensure documents showing proof of submission of returns are kept in case a dispute arises over filing. The First-tier Tribunal quashed the late filing penalties for the periods for which the taxpayer could produce proof of filing.
