Investigation into suspected income tax and NI fraud.

Two Premier League football clubs, Newcastle United and West Ham United, were raided last week as HMRC launched an investigation into suspected £5m income tax and National Insurance fraud. Both clubs said they were co-operating with the Revenue in its enquiries.

An HMRC spokesperson said it had ‘arrested several men working in the professional football industry’. He added: ‘180 HMRC officers were deployed across the UK and France ... Investigators searched a number of premises in the North East and South East of England, arrested the men and also seized business records, financial records, computers and mobile phones.

‘The French authorities are assisting the UK investigation, have made arrests and several locations have been searched in France. As this is an ongoing investigation HMRC is unable to provide any further detail at this time.’
