Digitalisation issues for taxpayers living overseas.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) was among the issues discussed at the October 2016 joint forum on expat tax and National Insurance the minutes of which have just been published. HMRC said expats’ access to personal tax accounts was likely to be divided into two groups.

The first is people who have lived in or had a presence in the UK and therefore have a National Insurance number bank account or residual HMRC records. They will be able to access their personal tax account in the same as UK-resident taxpayers – there is no restriction to logging in from abroad.

The second group is formed of those who have never lived in the UK but may be visiting. They will need to overcome some hurdles before they can access their accounts such as register for a National Insurance number obtain a P60 from their employer or have...
