  • If you have UK-resident clients with UK and US citizenship it is important to make sure that they are aware that the US Internal Revenue Service has extensive powers that could have a significant tax impact on transactions in the UK.

 

  • The decision in Doran Bros (TC5554) highlights the importance of ensuring that a company obtaining professional advice must ensure it clearly states that it is for the benefit of the business – rather than say solely for a specific employee – if it wishes to claim VAT relief on the cost.

 

  • The Making Tax Digital programme should allow tax practitioners access to more real-time information. This should enable more practical and immediate tax advice to be given during the year rather than matters coming to light after the year-end when it may be too late.
