Put your client admin into motion.
- Perhaps your practice could gain some kudos by running workshops for local people on tax digitalisation. This could cover HMRC’s Making Tax Digital plans and what taxpayers would need to do to ensure they comply with their obligations.
- Encourage clients to pay their tax liabilities electronically if possible especially as the 31 January deadline approaches. As well as the benefit of an immediate acknowledgement from HMRC this should avoid problems of dishonoured cheques and possible penalties for late payments.
- HMRC’s appetite to contest tax avoidance schemes in the courts continued in 2016 and shows no sign of abating. As ever make sure clients are aware what can go wrong even when an arrangement looks whiter than white.
