MTD – manifestly unfair
Page 4 of Taxation 17 November 2016 refers to a letter in the Financial Times written by tax assurance commissioner Jim Harra. In it he completely ignores the problems of administrative costs in time and money of the compulsory proposals of Making Tax Digital (MTD). However it is most unfortunate that he was propounding his views about MTD when the consultation exercise closed only three days earlier. The advice on page 5 to read Harra’s letter (‘If you do one thing’) is all very well but while it is obvious that digitisation will be the norm in a generation it is manifestly unfair that millions of small business and older taxpayers who have not been brought up on computers will be caused endless anxiety and professional costs.
