HMRC addressing online glitch affecting agents

HMRC has removed 2SV if it was set up by agents on their Government Gateway account to access services on behalf of clients.

A glitch that prevented some agents accessing HMRC online services if they were registered for 2-step verification (2SV) is being addressed. The programme acts as an extra layer of protection for individuals and some small businesses. It is not intended for use by agents accessing services on behalf of clients.

HMRC has removed 2SV if it was set up by agents on their Government Gateway account to access services on behalf of clients. It is also putting in place a temporary measure to prevent agents signing up for services that require 2SV using the login details they have to access services on clients’ behalf.

The change will be automatic and agents need take no action. HMRC will provide updates on the plans to roll out 2SV to agents as they develop.
