Time is running out to respond to MTD
Making Tax Digital (MTD) continues to dominate the agenda. The closing date for responses to the consultative documents is 7 November – only a few days away – and this has concentrated minds: a lot of new commentary has emerged recently. Taxation has been at the forefront of this and this week we publish an interview with Theresa Middleton who is in overall charge of the MTD project at HMRC (page 8). I raised with her some concerns that readers have raised with us.
Parliament has also been considering MTD. The Treasury Committee took evidence from several tax commentators and this led to Andrew Tyrie committee chair writing a strongly worded letter to the chancellor arguing for a proper review of the pilot before MTD is made compulsory (see ‘MTD should be piloted’ facing page).
