Malcolm Gunn pays tribute to a former deputy editor of Taxation.
In December 1987 I suddenly found myself moving into the editor’s room at Taxation due to an unexpected turn of events. At the same time nearly all the editorial team dissipated for a variety of reasons and so I was left with the daunting experience of taking over the magazine and forming a new team from scratch. John Newth was one of those who came to the rescue.
He came into my new office a tall imposing and handsome man and offered to fill the deputy editor role. He had previously worked on other Tolley publications in particular Tolley’s Inheritance Tax and so his meticulous approach to tax work made him ideal for the job. I did not fully appreciate at the time just how suitable for the role he would be.
