The Treasury select committee should have a statutory veto over appointing and dismissing the Office of Tax Simplification’s chair and tax director, according to the head of the parliamentary group.
In a letter to Philip Hammond, the new chancellor of the exchequer, Andrew Tyrie, said the committee disagreed with the former chancellor, George Osborne’s decision to reject such a move. An amendment has been proposed to the Finance Bill to give statutory effect to this recommendation.
Mr Tyrie said: ‘The OTS needs demonstrably independent leadership. Giving parliament – through the Treasury committee – a greater role in the appointment and dismissal of the OTS’s senior leadership would greatly increase ... its ability to provide the new chancellor with the robust, dispassionate and high-quality advice he needs.’
