Rollout delayed until March 2022.

A further delay in the timetable for the introduction of universal credit was announced in a written parliamentary statement. Originally planned to be in place for all claimants by 2017 the managed migration of benefit claims will start in July 2019 and complete in March 2022.

The statement provided more detail on the process:

  • The Department for Work and Pensions will continue to roll out universal credit to five jobcentres a month to June 2017 rising to 65 from February 2018. The process will finish in September 2018.
  • The government will limit the child element of tax credits and universal credit to two children from April 2017. New claims from families with more than two children will be directed to tax credits until November 2018. Thereafter they will be taken through universal credit.
