The practical aspects of making withholding tax claims.

KEY POINTS

  • Understand the nature of the income on which tax is being withheld.
  • Consider working with a local adviser who will have knowledge of local procedures.
  • It may not be worth pursuing small sums of tax.
  • Withholding tax can affect cashflow.

Many of us will have had calls from clients saying they have been told by one of their overseas customers that they will have to withhold tax on the payment they are making. Usually the client wants to know whether that is within the law and what can be done about it. However it is possible to take a few practical steps summarised in the Practicalities flowchart to make the process easier for both client and adviser.
