HMRC warn of dangers.
HMRC have posted a blog about scam emails on their working with tax agents page. The information will be familiar to most advisers, but it is worth reading and reminding clients about the dangers.
In particular, HMRC warn that the scammers are getting better, with some using the HMRC logo.
As well as being alert to spelling mistakes and poor grammar, the Revenue recommends advisers to look out for incorrect email addresses – check the “from” address; bogus websites which may look like HMRC’s; and phrases such as “urgent action needed”.
HMRC added: “With so much email activity around, do be on your guard. If you do receive an email that you are not sure about, report it to us and then delete it.”
